About 85 miles east of the Nevada border, the landscape changes suddenly from barren desert to lush pastures around the town of Delta, which is irrigated by the green Sevier River. Delta bills itself the “Gateway to Great Basin National Park,” and it does have a Best Western and other motels, gas stations, and a large supermarket—but very little else to attract visitors. One place worth a stop is the small Great Basin Museum (Tues.–Sat. only; free; 435/864-5013), a block north of Main Street at 328 W. 100 North Street. The museum features minerals, arrowheads, and local history exhibits, including a display of artifacts relating to Topaz Camp, an internment camp set up in the desert west of Delta by the U.S. government to imprison Americans of Japanese descent during World War II.
For a bite to eat, join the locals at the counter or a booth at Top’s City Cafe (435/864-2148), 313 W. Main Street, open 6 am to 9 pm for breakfasts, burgers, soups, salads, and creamy milk shakes.
